Transit App Re-Design

Figma Mockup

Design Research

  • Screen Space

•What info is first seen when opening the app?

Search bar, location, surrounding map, normal commute, Explore nearby, events, lists, reviews

    • What info fits on one screen, or best on multiple screens

Multiple screens for exploring nearby (One screen), search bar and your location,

    • What is the logical order to present the info?

Search bar and location - commute - explore nearby - recommended

    • How can they quickly access info relevant to them?

The search bar is the main thing used for transit users, they need to find the best route to take

    • How will info/interface change based on context?

The app will notice trends in recent locations and plan the most efficient path for the user

  • Form, Posture, Input Methods

    • Form: what is the form factor?

Mobile phone, kiosk, smartwatch, smart speaker; app constraints differ)

The example used : Google Maps used for mobile phones

    • Posture: how much attention user devotes, how product responds (usage contexts differ between smartphone and laptop)

Users normally devote little attention when it comes to transit apps, they use the app for reference on times and which busses to take

    • Input: how users interact with the product (touch, voice, hardware buttons, gesture)

Users interact with products by touch

  • Functional + Data Elements

    • Data: What are the most relevant Objects and attributes from your design requirements? e.g. map (current location), messages (sender), profile(username)

    Map, Bus tracking, route outline

    • Functional: what are the actions and contexts from design requirements to meet user needs?

Figuring out bus arrival, the bus being cancelled, Alternate routes, Bus stats, bus icons

Solution

The new application process will focus on accessibility and giving users a better commute to their destinations. Making the transit commute easier, will allow users to gain a better perspective while using transit. The application will allow the user to have an easier transition to their destination or personal or professional use. Designing with these goals in mind will allow users to rely on transit to have a better journey and will therefore improve the transit system.

Problem Statement

Sheridan College is creating a new transit app for users to make it easier for the day-to-day user to use the transit system. Users experiencing the issues of late bus times and arriving late to their destinations which causes issues with their personal lives. Users experiencing these pain points become frustrated with the transit system. This negatively impacts the user’s experience and thoughts on using the transit system.
